Shopping and Eating Gluten Free in Seattle is like a scavenger hunt with no clues. I started eating Gluten free about 5 or 6 years ago after a health care provider recommended it. Eating gluten free is not just for people with Celiacs disease - a gluten allergy or Gluten intolerance. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, spelt, oats, rye and barley. That means no baked goods, no soy sauce, no bagels, no pasta. Eating Gluten free also usually helps with overall physical tension. The best places to shop for Gluten Free items in Seattle are Whole Foods, Puget Sound Co-op and Trader Joes. PCC has a few items from the Flying Apron Bakery ( a totally gluten free bakery in Fremont), rice tortillas from Garden of Life, as well as the usual corn based products. They have Tinkyada brown rice pasta which tastes good but is more expensive than the Trader Joes brand of rice based pastas. Quinoa is also a good gluten replacement. They also carry a few frozen gluten free pizzas. Whole Foods has gluten free pretzels from Glutino as well as their gluten free bread sticks. They have a small gluten free section that includes cookies that you can bake fresh and other breads and pies. The thing is that most gluten free products at Whole Foods also have sugar in them which is another good thing to avoid. Trader Joe has some really good rice tortillas and a frozen gluten free cookie dough. The best really is from Flying Apron Bakery which uses maple syrup and fruit juice for sweetening. They also have a great gluten free pizza. Order your pumpkin pies early for the holidays as they usually run out. You can also find restaurants with gluten free dishes.
