How to Buy a Mattress

Learning about how to buy a mattress will help you to buy what is best for you.

Buying a good mattress can help alleviate back problems as well as sleep problems. Insomnia and waking up often can be caused by a bad bed and support system. A bed should feel so comfortable that you don't want to get out of one. It should provide the ultimate in support and comfort.

For side sleepers and especially women who sleep on their sides it is important to get a mattress that will allow your hips to sink into the bed while providing support for the low to upper back. Hip pain can be caused by having too hard of a bed.

For back sleepers, a bed should also provide support for the low back which is most vulnerable while not being too soft which causes the spine to curve too much.

Sleeping on the stomach is bad for your back and neck no matter how you look at it but if you can't break the habit, try a softer mattress so that you don't have to use a pillow. Sleeping on your stomach with a pillow increases the curvature of your neck and low back placing more strain on those joints.

When you get a new bed you should sleep on it for 30 days and break it in and give your body a chance to get used to it. You can also get more out of your new bed by getting a few massages during that period to help your body adjust to getting the support you need. Sometimes bodies that have been sleeping on the wrong style mattress will feel worse when you get a new bed. It isn't necessarily the bed but it could be due to the chronic tension in your back and neck.

You should feel rested when you get out of bed in the morning. Other causes for not feeling rested could be things like adrenal stress, thyroid problems or other hormonal imbalances.
